Jurgen Klopp shocked the footballing world last week by announcing that he will be parting ways with Liverpool at the end of the season. As Klopp’s tenure enters its final lap, here’s why Klopp’s impending departure will mark the end of an era at Liverpool.
When Klopp took over the reins at Liverpool in 2015, the Reds were a club in transition, searching for stability and a return to its glory days. Knowing the magnitude of the task at hand, he first asked the Anfield faithful to be patient and give him time to work his magic.
But Klopp’s impact on Liverpool was seen almost immediately as he embedded his high-pressing style of football in the club. Soon, Klopp transformed Liverpool into one of the most entertaining teams to watch in the Premier League. More importantly, he instilled a winning mentality in the squad that none of his predecessors had managed to do.
Perhaps Klopp’s crowning moment as Liverpool’s manager came in June 2019 when Klopp led Liverpool to their sixth Champions League victory. However, some like me, would argue that Klopp’s greatest achievement is guiding Liverpool to their maiden Premier League title in 2020.
The end of an era
During his stint as Liverpool manager, Klopp has forged an epic battle with his Manchester City counterpart, Pep Guardiola. The duo have been involved in some pulsating title races that have kept fans on the edge of their seats.
When Klopp announced that he would be stepping down from his post at the end of the season, Guardiola said that he would sleep a lot better. This is perhaps the biggest tribute that the Spaniard could have paid the German since the duo have forged a rivalry for the ages and defined an era in football.
As Klopp’s tenure at Anfield draws to a close, the legacy he leaves behind is one of unparalleled success, passion, and unwavering commitment. He may be leaving Liverpool, but his imprint on the club will endure for generations to come.
