Yes, he beat up a 40+-year-old Stipe Miocic. That’s right. Jon Jones sent Miocic into Retirement. This was the 9th UFC Champion who has seen defeat after entering the Octagon with ‘Bones’. There’s no denying that Jon Jones is one of the if not the Greatest Fighters the sport of Mixed Martial Arts has ever seen. But as crazy as it might sound, Jon Jones is hurting his own legacy by rambling on continuously about his “Building my Legacy” bullshit.
In reality, all he is doing is Ducking the real threat. And that threat is Tom Aspinall. It now feels more so like the 37-year-old is getting scared and even his own fanbase can feel it. After making Stipe Miocic gooey-legged in the 3rd round of their fight at UFC 309, Jon Jones was asked about his future in the Octagon Interview. There inside the Madison Square Garden, ‘Bones’ admitted to the fans that if negotiations go well with the UFC, the fans might get to see “what they want to see”. Obviously referring to Tom Aspinall.
That was the first and last time Jon Jones ever hinted at defending his UFC Heavyweight Championship Belt against the interim Champion. Up until then he has always denied ever fighting Aspinall and even later on when he was asked whether he would do so, he replied negatively on the matter. Jon Jones later summed up that he is content with where he is right now as a fighter and the only way he will fight again is if he is put up against Alex Pereira, a fight which Jones thinks will further his legacy as a fighter. And also that UFC knows his wish.
Jon Jones Has Lost All His Senses
Wanting to fight someone who was just a year ago 2 weight classes below you, rather than fighting someone who has knocked out 7 of his last 9 opponents at Heavyweight in the first round of the fight is straight up Ducking your opponent. And at the moment, there is no other fighter ducking his opponent better than Jon Jones. Even Dana White suggested that he would only book a Jon Jones vs Alex Pereira fight if and only if Jon Jones managed to beat Tom Aspinall first.
On the other hand, ‘Bones’ would readily hang up his boots if he didn’t get the fight he wanted because according to him he had done enough to prove his worth. While the last part of the previous statement is true, it sounds as if the Greatest Ever would rather back out of a challenge than put his Legacy at stake. And this in itself is tarnishing Jon Jones’ Legacy as the greatest ever.
So will Jon Jones finally accept to fight Tom Aspinall? Or would he rather hang up his boots forever tarnishing a small part of his own legacy? Let us know your opinion in the comments below.
