International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed its new chairman Jay Shah. The former secretary Board of Cricket Control for India (BCCI) won the seat uncontested. He will be taking charge from December 1st, 2024. Mr. Shah will be the fifth Indian after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar to be elected to this high-profile position. However, it will be a lot more challenging than the BCCI role.
In recent times he along with former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly. And current president Roger Binny did a lot of development for the domestic cricket of the nation. Organizing various small leagues and state leagues as well. Under him, Indian cricket changed into a massive powerhouse not only on the field but off the field as well. He also serves as president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
The decision has been taken because of rising clout in the governing body. Both financial and otherwise being cut to size by Shashank Manohar. The Indian cricket board was among the majority to have backed him. BCCI is the richest board in the world and thus the majority of the financial backing for the top-tier cricketing board comes from the Indian board.
Pakistan’s hosting Champions Trophy is in danger
As Jay Shah is elected as Chairman does this turn the table for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)? They are to host the next big event, which is the Champions Trophy in 2025. India was the team that was opposed to going and playing in Pakistan. There has a turmoil over this for months now. During the Asia Cup 2023, India did not travel to Pakistan and played their games in Sri Lanka and it was a hybrid model.
Pakistan was not interested this time in any such conditions. But now as the thing stands there is an uncertainty about whether the tournament will be shifted to another country or will happen in a hybrid model just like the Asia Cup. Shah will decide on the future of the tournament in December 2024 when he takes charge of the seat.
