Ahead of the Paris Olympics, India has received a significant setback as star javelin thrower DP Manu has been suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). Manu, who was considered a strong Olympic medal contender, tested positive for anabolic steroids during the Indian Grand Prix in April this year, according to a PTI report.
Following the positive test, NADA recommended that the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) impose a suspension on Manu, barring him from competition. At just 25 years old, Manu was a promising talent for India, having won a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Championships and being on track to qualify for the Paris Olympics based on his world ranking. However, this doping scandal now jeopardizes his Olympic dreams.
Manu was previously listed for the inter-state championships but has since been removed from the updated roster. AFI President Adil Sumariwala confirmed that NADA had instructed the federation to prevent Manu from competing, although the final determination of guilt has yet to be confirmed. Manu is currently seeking clarity on the situation.
In recent events, Manu showcased impressive performances, finishing second in the Federation Cup held in Bhubaneswar from May 15 to 19 with a throw of 82.06 meters behind Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra. He also won the gold medal at the Taiwan Athletics Open on June 1 with a throw of 81.58 meters.
Despite being ranked 15th on the World Athletics Road to Paris list and still in contention for the Paris Olympics, Manu’s suspension casts doubt on his participation. Neeraj Chopra and Kishore Jena have already secured their spots for the men’s javelin event, with the final eligibility cutoff being June 30.
