Japan and New Zealand Teams Arrive in Ranchi for FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers, Eager to Secure Paris Spots

The Japan Women’s Hockey Team and New Zealand Women’s Hockey Team have landed in Ranchi for the highly-anticipated FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024. Japan, placed in Pool A, will kick off their campaign against the Czech Republic on January 13, while New Zealand, in Pool B, will face Italy on the same day. Japan is set to play against Germany on January 14 and Chile on January 16, while New Zealand will compete against India on January 14 and the United States on January 16.

With only the top three teams earning a spot in the Paris Olympics, both squads anticipate stiff competition. Having recently participated in the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023 at the same venue, the World No. 11 Japan may have an advantage.

Japan Captain Yuri Nagai expressed her pleasure at returning to Ranchi, emphasizing optimism for Japan and India’s performances. She mentioned squad changes based on training camp outcomes after their loss in the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2023 Final against India.

Coach Jude Menezes outlined Japan’s strategy, focusing on triumphing over every opponent. He highlighted the challenge of the Ranchi pitch but believes their prior experience grants them an edge.

For New Zealand, this marks their first visit to India, and Captain Olivia Merry acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by India. Merry expressed confidence and readiness, aiming to secure the top spot in their Pool.

New Zealand Head Coach Phil Burrows emphasized thorough preparations, including matches against the USA and Malaysia. He concluded optimistically, hinting at potential surprises in the upcoming tournament.

Some argue that the familiarity of Japan with the Ranchi pitch may give them an advantage over other teams.
