IOA’s Financial Corruption Tainting Indian Sports

India performed poorly in the Paris Olympics 2024. The nation won just 6 medals, with one silver and five bronze. The athletes failed to perform as per the expectations. Most of them failed by fine margins securing the fourth positions. However, during the Paralympics 2024, India won 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals. It has been all over a decent performance from the nation.

After the multinational event has ended there have been serious speculations that are being circulated. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) treasurer Sahdev Yadav has been accused of financial wrongdoing during his tenure as secretary general of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF). The IOA president has issued notices to five executive committee members for various violations, including one of the Sports Code.

However, Yadav has called the charges “baseless accusations” and provided documents to make his point. PT Usha accused Yadav of not returning a loan sum of 1.75 crore INR IWLF had obtained from the 2010 CWG Organising Committee to pay off a penalty of $500,000 (to be paid in four installments) issued by the International Weightlifting Federation on the Indian body for a series of doping violations.

Treasurer Allegations Spark IOA Scandal

Yadav has also given his given his defense. He said the IWLF has paid the first three installments. These are ($50,000 for participation in the South Asian Games) and a further paid amount of $125,000 in two installments. Is this spoiling the reputation of Indian Sports? Somewhat yes these situations the player’s mind also gets affected and they fail to perform on the bigger stages.

Yadav wrote in his reply to Usha, “The minutes of the 5th executive council meeting of IOA dated 1/11/2021 reflect a categorical agreement that the amount debited in favour of IWLF were reversed in the Books of Accounts of the IOA and that the said amount would never be claimed again. The Books of Accounts were accordingly corrected whereby the loan amount was written off.”
