In the midst of the recent upheaval within the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has intervened by establishing a three-member ad-hoc committee to oversee the operations of the wrestling association. This move comes in the wake of the Sports Ministry’s suspension of WFI following controversial election results and allegations surrounding former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
The suspension was prompted by the retirement of wrestler Sakshi Malik and the return of the prestigious Padma Shri by Bajrang Punia, both in protest against the election of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI President. Sanjay’s alleged close ties to the suspended Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh further fueled discontent among veteran wrestlers.
Sanjay Singh’s tenure as president faced opposition, with accusations of arbitrary decision-making leading to the Sports Ministry’s suspension of the entire wrestling association. The ad-hoc committee, now back in action, aims to restore stability and transparency to the beleaguered WFI.
