Indian Women’s Cricket Stuck In A Cycle Of Underperformance

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is ongoing. The two teams from Group A have been decided for the semi-final. Australia and New Zealand have qualified from the first group. The win by the Kiwis against Pakistan led to the knocking out of India. The Women in Blue would have qualified if Pakistan won the match. However, Fatima Sana’s side was bowled out for just 56 runs.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s side have performed poorly in the major tournament. They lost their first game against the Black Caps by 58 runs. Despite winning the next two games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they failed to win a crucial match against Australia. Having the upper hand in the game they were unable to chase down the target of 152 runs. It was a huge opportunity for Harmanpreet’s side to win the match and qualify for the knockouts.

Indian Women’s lost the opening game against a side who were in dismal form. They won only one T20I game in 12 games played before the major tournament. However, they buckled up and upset the second favourites of the group India. Amol Muzumdar and his staff need to answer the critics and work on the weakness that was exposed to the opponents.

Indian batters are just a bunch of jokers

Indian Women’s side is too much reliant on some cricketers. Smriti Mandhana has failed to perform in the crucial games for the side. The middle order except for Harmanpreet Kaur and all other batters have showcased dismal performances throughout the tournament. Batting has been a problem for India in this World Cup. The captain despite having an injury is the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament so far. This clearly states the over-dependency on the batting from the captain.

The bowlers have performed decently with Renuka Singh and Arundhuti Reddy picking up 7 wickets each. The other bowlers have failed to perform in the major tournament. Overall the team has gone down drastically in the major tournament and could not keep up the pressure in the important matches. The winning mentality was also missing from the side.
