Imane Khelif’s Success Is A Violation Of Women’s Sports Integrity

Imane Khelif won the gold medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Algerian Olympic boxer was found in controversy during the competition. In a fight with an Italian boxer, Angela Carini abandoned her fight. With Khelif at 46 seconds in a contest that created a controversy at the Olympics. Khelif has gotten a lot of transphobic insults. Many media outlets, as well as celebrities like Elon Musk, have criticised the Olympics for allowing a “man” to fight a woman. 

The Algerian was permitted to fight at the Olympics. Despite being disqualified from the women’s world championships last year for failing gender eligibility tests. Now she is once again at the center of a gender-related controversy following revelations about her eligibility status. According to a report published in Reduxx, medical reports accessed by French journalist Djaffar Ait Aoudia confirm that the boxer has “testicles.”

According to the findings, Imane Khelif has 5-alpha reductase deficiency, a sexual development condition that affects hereditary males. The stolen medical records were purportedly created in June 2023 as a partnership between the Kremlin-Bicêtre Hospital in Paris, France, and the Mohamed Lamine Debaghine Hospital in Algiers, Algeria. Imane Khelif’s medical report, which included an MRI and further testing, revealed traits consistent with a sexual development abnormality. 

Women’s sports change gender rules

Are women’s sports ready for complex gender cases like Khelif’s? The MRI revealed that Khelif lacked a uterus, internal testes, and a “micropenis” that resembled an enlarged clitoris. According to the medical report, chromosomal tests verified an XY karyotype and hormone study revealed testosterone levels within the normal male range. 5-alpha reductase deficiency is a hereditary disease that affects sexual development in males, both before birth and during puberty. 

According to the IOC, Imane Khelif was assigned the female gender at birth, and her passport confirms this, making her eligible to compete in the Games. It should also be mentioned that Khelif has participated in several IBA-organized tournaments before his suspension in 2023. IBA was suspended by IOC owing to governance difficulties and corruption allegations.
