In an unexpected turn of events during the first Test between India and England in Hyderabad, Jasprit Bumrah found himself at the center of controversy, resulting in an official reprimand for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
The incident occurred during the 81st over of England’s second innings when Bumrah intentionally obstructed Ollie Pope’s path as he attempted a run, resulting in inappropriate physical contact.
The breach, falling under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct, pertains to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee, or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match).” Bumrah’s actions, deemed a Level 1 offence, mark his first transgression in the past 24 months.
One demerit point has been added to Bumrah’s record as a consequence of this breach. The charge was brought forth by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus, and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.
Typically, Level 1 breaches result in an official reprimand, with a maximum penalty of 50% of the player’s match fee and one or two demerit points. However, given the unusual nature of this incident, Bumrah’s offense has stirred conversations among cricket enthusiasts about maintaining the spirit of the game.
Jasprit Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offence and opted to accept the sanction imposed by Richie Richardson of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, avoiding the need for a formal hearing. This incident serves as a reminder that even the most skilled and composed players can momentarily deviate from the expected standards, sparking discussions about on-field conduct and the role of match officials.
