It is pretty evident who the two tennis players that will entertain the GOAT conversations of the next era are. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Both, the Italian and Spanish are in their younger twenties and have absolutely dominated the Calendar Year of 2024 and the Tennis season as well sharing the 4 Grand Slams between the both of them.
Jannik Sinner clinched both the Hardcourt titles at the Australian Open at the start of the year and the US Open in early September, making him one of the very few to do so. On the other hand, it was Carlos Alcaraz who won the Clay Court at Roland Garros and the Grass Court at Wimbledon. So why do we claim that it will be Jannik Sinner who will be termed as the Future GOAT in the coming years ahead of Carlos Alcaraz? Well, that’s because of one simple factor that the Italian possesses that the Spaniard doesn’t. And that is Consistency.
With his win over Novak Djokovic who is arguably the greatest Tennis player of all time at the ATP Shanghai Masters event, Jannik Sinner has now won 7 total titles in 2024, these include Australian Open (Outdoor/Hard) US Open (Outdoor/Hard) ATP Masters 1000 Cincinnati (Outdoor/Hard) Halle (Outdoor/Grass), ATP Masters 1000 Miami (Outdoor/Hard), Rotterdam (Indoor/Hard) to go with his 2024 Shanghai Masters title.
All the while only losing 6 matches out of the 72 he played throughout the year, taking his season tennis record to 66-6. This is where Carlos Alcaraz falls behind. The 22-year-old has lost 10 matches in 2024 with his ATP singles record standing at 48-10, in the shadow of Jannik Sinner. While Alcaraz has a better Head-to-Head overall and also recorded a win at the recently concluded China Open against Sinner, it is sure to fall behind as time passes.
On the other hand, Jannik Sinner recently clinched the ATP Year-end no.1 ranking. Achieving this makes him the first Italian in the history of Tennis to do so. The world no.1 achieved this feat following his win in the Semi-Finals at the 2024 Shanghai Masters event. Where Carlos Alcaraz made a quarterfinal exit. Sinner’s win against Djokovic at the Shanghai Masters after a year of utmost consistency at the top proves that he is the rightful heir to the throne of Nadal-Federer-Djokovic in Tennis.
