In women’s compound archery, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Praneet Kaur, and world champion Aditi Swami celebrated a hat-trick of gold medals at the World Cup.
Last month, they clinched gold by defeating Italy in the first leg of the World Cup held in Shanghai. They also secured the gold medal in the fourth stage held in Paris last year. The world-ranked Indian women’s trio defeated Turkey’s team of Hazal Burun, Ise Bera Suzar, and Bezam 232-226 to claim the top spot without dropping a set. The second-seeded Indian team started strong with three aces (near the centre point), and each of the next three arrows only lost one point. In the first round, the Indian team led by one point against the fifth-seeded opponents. In the next round of six arrows, the Indian trio dominated, scoring five perfect 10s to extend their lead to four points by the end of the second round. Despite Turkey’s attempt to challenge with four perfect 10s in the semifinals, the Indian team scored 58 points in the final round to secure their victory.
Silver Medal for India in Mixed Team Event
Asian Games champion Jyoti Surekha Vennam, however, missed out on a second gold and instead earned a silver medal in the mixed team event alongside Priyansh. The Indian mixed team of Jyoti and Priyansh lost 155-153 to the American pair of Olivia Dean and Sayre Sullivan in the final. The match featured the two top-ranked teams. In the first round, the Indian team led with 39 points out of 40, but Olivia and Sullivan levelled the scores at 76-76 in the next round. The second-seeded American team then achieved a perfect score of 40 in the third round, while the Indian team managed 39 points. In the final round, the Indian team needed 40 points for a shoot-off but could only score 38 points. The US team won the gold medal with 39 points.
Prathamesh Phuge’s Performance
Prathamesh Phuge finished third in the compound event after losing to Mike Schlosser of the Netherlands in a shoot-off. Earlier, Phuge had lost to American James in the semifinals.
