Has Anthony Edwards Done Enough To Draw Comparisons With All-Time Great Players?

Anthony Edwards is one of the best young players in the NBA. The 22-year-old has led the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Conference Finals and is keen on helping them win a championship as well. His leadership at a young age has won him praise from his peers and members of the media. He is often compared to other great young players like Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum and Zion Williamson. While his performances have proven that he belongs to the discussion, the media is crossing the line by pushing narratives of him being the next big thing in basketball.

He certainly has a lot of talent, but Edwards is far from proving to be the next face of the league. In a recent episode of ESPN’s ‘Get UP’ journalist Mike Greenberg, stated that the T-Wolves guard is the heir to Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. This is a big statement as Jordan and Bryant are arguably two of the greatest players to ever grace a basketball court. Edwards has been impressive but at the age of 22 Bryant already had two championships, while Jordan was tearing up the league and bringing in some of the biggest brands to the NBA.

Anthony Edwards’ team is currently just one game away from elimination at the hands of Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Finals. The 22-year-old has not done a particularly great job against the Mavs as compared to the other series in this year’s playoffs. He has a huge mountain to climb before he can even think of getting into the NBA Finals as coming back from a 3-1 deficit is a very difficult task.

Anthony Edwards’ rise to fame could be due to the absence of Ja Morant

Anthony Edwards came into the league as the number-one overall pick in the 2020 draft. However, he had to work hard to become a recognised player as Ja Morant was leading the way with his exploits in Memphis. The Grizzlies guard is one of the most controversial players in the league. He was suspended for 25 games during the last offseason as he was seen with a gun during an Instagram live. This was not the only time that Morant had faced suspension due to the possession of a gun.

Despite all the controversies off the court, his talent on the basketball court is known to all. He is a human highlight reel and produces moments of magic every time he plays the game. Edwards came up short against Morant’s Grizzlies team in his very first playoff run. The 22-year-old put his best effort, but the Grizzlies proved to be too strong for the T-Wolves.

Next season Morant will be back with the Memphis Grizzlies to rightfully earn his respect back in the league. He will be excited to match up against Anthony Edwards as it is the T-Wolves guard that is currently the talk of the town. Morant will be looking to put on a show and prove to the world that he still is the best young talent in the NBA.
