Global Chess League Prove Giants Are not Invincible Anymore, ft.Magnus Carlsen

The Tech Mahindra Global Chess League 2024 has been ongoing. On Tuesday, Hikaru Nakamura faced the unbeaten Alireza Firouzja. The American Grandmaster ended the French chess master’s unbeaten run. The fans were expecting the game to end in a draw. But Firouzja offered his rook up for trade, and the resultant pawn endgame turned out to be completely winning for the Speed King.

The Gambits won the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League match 14-5 at Friends House on Tuesday. Both women, Bibisara Assaubayeva and Elisabeth Paehtz, defeated Alexandra Kosteniuk and Valentina Gunina, respectively. The PBG Alaskan Knights are now one match win away from securing their spot in the Finals. The young guns are firing in the competition so far while the experienced ones have failed to impress. Especially Magnus Carlsen, as the No.1 Chess player has lost his second game in a row.

Maxime Vachier-Lagrave defeated the Norwegian Grandmaster for the second consecutive year at the Global Chess League. Carlsen stormed out of the playing area, apparently agitated, after losing. Pipers’ R Praggnanandhaa led a furious onslaught against Vidit’s Black King, resulting in a win and keeping the team in the competition. This season has been for the youngsters who have been keeping their teams in the game.

Magnus Carlsen’s blunders continue

Is Magnus Carlsen losing his edge? Magnus remains the best Chess player in the world. Previously Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen turned back the clock for a now-rare showdown. The two previous world champions drew 48 moves at Friend’s House. But not before Anand’s rooks alternated harassing Carlsen’s king. Carlsen will surely make a comeback and his fans also believe the same.

Ganges Grandmasters lost 5-14 to the PBG Alaskan Kings. Viswanathan Anand lost to Anish Giri. Arjun Erigaisi drew with Nodirbek Abdusattarov; Parham Maghsoodloo lost to Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. R. Vaishali drew with Tan Zhongyi, Nurgyul Salimova lost to Alina Kashlinskaya and Volodar Murzin lost to Nihal Sarin.
