The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary, Jay Shah, has announced Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir, a former India opener, will succeed Rahul Dravid, whose tenure concluded after India clinched the T20 World Cup.
Gambhir’s appointment marks a significant shift as he will oversee the Indian team across all three game formats. Jay Shah mentioned that the BCCI would not appoint separate coaches for different formats. Gambhir’s tenure as head coach is set for 3.5 years. The BCCI had called for applications in May, followed by interviews with two candidates: Gautam Gambhir and former Indian women’s team coach WV Raman. Ultimately, Gambhir was chosen for the role.
In the official announcement, Jay Shah expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I am very happy to announce Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian team. I welcome him to this crucial position. Modern cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has closely witnessed these changes. His experience, resilience, and success in various roles make him the ideal person to lead Indian cricket forward.”
Shah further highlighted Gambhir’s clear vision for the Indian team and his extensive experience, which equipped him to meet the demands of this high-pressure coaching role. The BCCI extends its full support to Gambhir as he embarks on this new journey.
With Gambhir’s appointment, the position of mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has become vacant. As a result, KKR has contacted Rahul Dravid to fill this role.
