Sergio Perez and Red Bull have agreed to part ways. Marking the end of the Mexican driver’s time with the Formula One squad. Many are surprised by the decision. Especially because Perez signed a contract extension in May that was anticipated to keep him with the organisation until 2026. The sudden departure sparked speculation, with many linking the decision to Red Bull’s dissatisfaction with Perez’s recent performances.
Despite his considerable contributions in prior seasons. Including helping the team win Constructors’ Championship titles in 2022 and 2023, his form this year has been questioned. Perez finished seventh in the Drivers’ Championship. A staggering 285 points behind teammate Max Verstappen, who won his fourth straight title. Furthermore, Perez failed to win a single race this season. Making him the only driver from a top-four team without a victory.
Liam Lawson, RB driver, is set to be confirmed as Pérez’s successor in the coming days. Perez, whose poor form cost Red Bull this year’s constructors’ championship, had been discussing the next steps in his contract since the start of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. While an ambassadorial post was offered, Perez chose to walk away from his Red Bull contract entirely and allow him to pursue racing opportunities elsewhere.
Red Bull Discarding Talent Too Soon
Sergio Perez’s next steps need to be clarified. Formula One has agreed in principle with General Motors to add a Cadillac team to the grid in 2026. Given Pérez’s massive popularity in the North American market, he could be a top candidate for a position there. Christian Horner Bull’s boss said, “I would like to thank Checo [Perez] for all he has done for Oracle Red Bull Racing over the past four seasons.”
The boss further added, “His five wins, all on street circuits, were also a spectacular mark of his determination to always push to the limit. While Checo will not race for the team next season, he will always be an extremely popular team member and a treasured part of our history. Thank you, Checo.”
