Former Fast Bowler David Johnson Passes Away

Former Indian fast bowler David Johnson has died suddenly, reportedly after jumping from the fourth floor of his apartment, causing widespread mourning among Indian cricketers.

According to police, Johnson, 52, was found dead outside his apartment in Kanakashree Layout, Kothanur, on Thursday. Authorities suspect suicide and are conducting further investigations. Police sources mentioned that Johnson had been unwell for some days. He is survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

Johnson played two Tests for India in 1996 and was part of a renowned Karnataka team featuring players like Anil Kumble, Venkatesh Prasad, Doda Ganesh, and Javagal Srinath. He played 39 first-class matches and ran a cricket academy near his home.

Born on October 16, 1971, Johnson made his Test debut for India in October 1996 against Australia and recorded a proud career moment by bowling at 157.8 km/h in that match. His last Test was against South Africa in Durban in 1996, and he did not play any ODIs for India.

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble expressed his sorrow on Instagram, writing, “Sad to hear the news of the death of my cricket partner David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Benny is gone too soon!” Johnson gained national recognition during the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season with a standout performance against Kerala, taking 10 wickets for 152 runs. In first-class cricket, he took 125 wickets in 39 matches at an average of 28.63 and a strike rate of 47.4, and he also scored a century as a lower-order batsman.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah conveyed his condolences on Twitter, stating, “Heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contribution to the game will always be remembered.” Johnson took 41 wickets in 33 List A matches, with his last competitive match being in the Karnataka Premier League in 2015. Gautam Gambhir also expressed his grief, writing, “David Johnson’s death is sad. May God give strength to his family and loved ones.”
