Real Madrid wants to change the name of their renowned stadium from Santiago Bernabeu to The Bernabeu. The study states that this is being done for business and marketing purposes. By 2024, Real Madrid’s home stadium, Santiago Bernabeu, was increasingly being used for external events. The Santiago Bernabeu, notably named after one of the club’s greatest legends, is gradually losing its name as the club administration drops the initial name and calls it just ‘The Bernabeu’.
Bernabeu was Madrid’s president for nearly 35 years. During which the team won six European Cups, 16 league titles, six Spanish Cups, and numerous more medals. He also reportedly assisted Manchester United in rebuilding its team after the 1958 Munich air disaster. The stadium’s website, as well as its official social media profile, are already simply referred to as Bernabeu. The stadium tour is now known as Tour Bernabeu.
The recently published memorabilia of the stadium model solely has the name Bernabeu. The word ‘Santiago’ appears to be on its way out, despite Real Madrid’s efforts to keep a low profile and move slowly in this regard. After all, it is an experiment, and the findings must be properly evaluated. A shorter name would benefit the club commercially while also opening the door to future lucrative sponsorships.
Real Madrid’s Legacy Left in Ruins
Rival club FC Barcelona has done with the Camp Nou and Spotify. An official name change is still a long way off, as it would require approval from the members’ assembly. On the pitch, Los Blancos have already completed their 2024 season. To round off the season, they defeated Sevilla 4-2 at home in La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti’s team will return to play on January 3 against Valencia at the Mestalla.
They are now second in La Liga with 40 points after 18 games, trailing league leaders Atletico Madrid by one point. However, Los Blancos’ performance in the UEFA Champions League has been far from remarkable. They have won only three of their six competition matches, losing the remaining three. Madrid will look to qualify for the knockout rounds.
