Ruben Amorim has made a massive claim following Manchester United’s humiliating defeat to Newcastle United at Old Trafford. After losing three consecutive games against Tottenham Hotspur, Bournemouth, and Wolverhampton Wanderers, United wanted to get back on track against the Magpies on Monday night. However, it turned out to be another unpleasant night as Newcastle won 2-0 thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton.
He became the first Manchester United manager since Louis van Gaal in 2015 to oversee three consecutive Premier League losses. United have remained in the top division since winning promotion back to the old First Division in 1975, but they are only seven points clear of the drop zone at the midway point of the season. United spent more than £21 million ($25 million) to employ Amorim, and over £10 million to fire Ten Hag.
About £11 million to release the Portuguese from his contract with Sporting CP. He accepted full responsibility for the team’s drop in performance. The squad has had six wins and has already lost nine games, with a -5 goal differential after scoring 21 goals but surrendering 26. Amorim was brought in to fix matters, but so far, the former Sporting Lisbon manager has lost five of his last six league games.
Dropping to the Championship?
Under Amorim, they have conceded 20 goals in 11 games. Opta Joe reports that the 18 goals conceded in December are their highest in a single month since 60 years ago. Amorim has six days to get his message across to his players before United’s next game against arch-rivals and Premier League leaders Liverpool, who hammered the Red Devils 7-0 at Anfield in 2023.
The coach said that things might have to get worse before they get better. He added: “I think our club needs a shock and we have to understand that. It is a very difficult moment and we have to fight for the next game and to have also [better] performances. We are losing some things from the last games.”
