On Sunday India saw the greatest ever protest from the football fans of West Bengal. The three Kolkata Giants, East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, and Mohammedan Sporting Clubs fans were on the road for the protest. For the justice of the late doctor Moumita Debnath, who was brutally raped and murdered inside the government hospital named RG Kar. The city is raising its voice and shouting for justice.
There was a Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal Durand Cup 2024 match scheduled on Sunday. However, the police and government abandoned the match. Stating the reason that they would not be able to supply enough amount of security during the game. The TIFOs were made by the fans to raise their voice against the heartbreaking incident. After the decision of the match was canceled the three-team supporters for the very first time merged. For the sake of humanity near the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Kirangan, famously known as Salt Lake Stadium.
The Durand Cup committee wanted the match to be organized by giving the Army protection. The tickets were sold out and fans from across the states came to watch the game. However, the police stuck to their decision of not taking any kind of responsibility after the match was over and if the two teams’ fans on the road protested.
Police saw the strength of united football fans
Was this done to condemn the voices of the fans and the youthful supporters? Police even charged over the fans. Despite they were just raising their voice and saying We Want Justice and some other slogans as well. Several fans were taken inside the police van. Some fans were also injured after the police thought of charging. Some police even struck them with their Police Security Stick. Rapid Action Force (RAF) on the fans were also used.
However, after the fans were taken in the police van the fans got raged and they circled the van and did not let them take it away. All India Football Federation (AIFF) president Kalyan Chaubey rushed to the place of occurrence and asked the police to leave the fans and let the protest go on. Mohun Bagan Super Giants team captain Subhashish Bose was also present with his family protesting. It has been a worldwide shock and justice should be delivered. The ministers and government see what football fans can do when they unite.
