FIH Hockey Pro League: Indian Women’s Hockey Team Goes Down to Belgium

The Indian Women’s Hockey Team fell 0-2 to Belgium in their second match of the European leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24 on Thursday. Belgium’s goals were scored by Alexia ‘T’Serstevens (34’) and Louise Dewaet (36’).

India started the match with an aggressive approach, winning an early penalty corner but failing to capitalize on it. They continued to press Belgium, which initially struggled to maintain possession and relied on counter-attacks. India’s defence stood firm, denying Belgium any scoring opportunities. Towards the end of the first quarter, Belgium won a penalty corner, but Indian goalkeeper Savita made a comfortable save. Despite several circle entries, India couldn’t find the back of the net, and the first quarter ended goalless.

In the second quarter, Belgium ramped up the pressure with rigorous passing and constant attacks. India absorbed the pressure well, maintaining possession and making quick passes to test Belgium’s defence. Despite their efforts, neither team managed to score, and the match remained 0-0 at halftime.

Belgium came out strong in the third quarter, with Alexia ‘T’Serstevens (34’) and Louise Dewaet (36’) scoring field goals within two minutes, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead. India responded by increasing their intensity and won a penalty corner towards the end of the quarter, but they couldn’t convert it.

In the fourth quarter, India made early advances and rigorously tested Belgium’s defence. Despite maintaining possession and making regular circle entries, they couldn’t break through, and the match ended 2-0 in favour of Belgium.

A notable highlight was Indian forward Deepika Soreng making her senior team debut in this match.
