English Referees’ Incompetence is Ruining Football

Only 2 games in the Euros have seen immense controversy. English referees officiated both games. The Quarter-final between Spain and Germany was a European classic. One man spoiled this brilliant show of football. In the second half of extra time, Jamal Musiala struck a shot right which hit Chelsea man Marc Cuccurella’s outstretched arm. Any competent referee would have awarded a penalty. Anthony Taylor is far from a competent referee. He denied a nailed-on pen which could have won the game for the hosts. It was a disgraceful decision. The officiating in the Euros has been fantastic, only referees from one particular country have been dreadful.

English Incompetence Frustrates

The officials from the English Premier League look like amateurs more often than not. Their calls are hard to fathom and to call them blind would be an understatement. Their level is far below their international peers. They regularly make terrible calls in the Premier League. At the international stage, where the entire world is watching, their incompetence is clearly evident. Virgil Van Dijk came out and took a subtle dig when he said that Xavi Simon’s goal during the all-important France v Netherlands game was disallowed because the ”English” referee decided to disallow it.

Point Of Concern For Football Federations

International tournaments should not select referees like Anthony Taylor and Michael Oliver. Their incompetence is extremely obvious to pundits and audiences alike. It’s almost like they’re pacing across the pitch with blinds over their eyes. Their decision-making is atrocious. English referees are a threat to the game and its integrity. In short, they are ruining the game. Humans, as officials, are allowed to make mistakes, but the sub-par, dreadful officiating by English refs is a huge problem for Football and Fifa. The FA should improve its standards for the selection of referees before any English referee is called up for important international matches.
