Chelsea finished the 2023-24 season placed sixth in the Premier League. In a campaign filled with inconsistencies and disappointments, Mauricio Pochettino’s men went on a six-game unbeaten streak to finish the season. This has helped them qualify for European football, which is an incredible achievement considering that they were languishing in 10th and 11th place for most of the season.
While the club were in crisis mid-season, fans and media personalities called out Pochettino and demanded his sacking as the manager. However, he promised that the Blues would be back to their best soon and although it happened a little late, Pochettino delivered what he promised. Chelsea were playing some great football to end the season and had massive results against Everton, Tottenham and West Ham United.
This will certainly give a boost to Mauricio Pochettino’s future at the club. He was signed at the end of the 2022-23 campaign to a two-year deal with an option to extend for a year. With just another year left on his contract, the question now looms about his future with Chelsea. The Argentinian made some comments about his contract situation at the club but did not confirm if there was an extension offer on the table. Recent reports suggest that the club are focused on him being part of the future, but they would look at other young coaches if terms are not agreed.
Would sacking Mauricio Pochettino be the right move for Chelsea?
Chelsea have not been at their best for the past two seasons now. They have gone trophyless for almost three years and this is not something that the fans are very happy about. Mauricio Pochettino has elevated the mood of the fans with a stellar finish to the 2023-24 season, but he will have to deliver trophies as the club is not used to having a trophy drought.
In his first season at the club, Poch was able to lead the team to a Carabao Cup Final appearance. He also helped them to an FA Cup Semi-Final run, where they were defeated by Manchester City. Their performances in these cup competitions showed the world that the team was capable of competing for trophies. However, Mauricio Pochettino is not the most successful coach when it comes to winning trophies.
Now he certainly can change that, but whether it will be at Chelsea is something that we will have to wait and see. Having managed clubs like Southampton and Tottenham Hotspurs in England, Poch was appointed due to his experience in the Premier League. While not a lot has gone his way, the Argentinian has managed to make the players at Chelsea play his style of football.
They have been very leaky at the back, but that comes with having a young squad. Having played out a whole year and shown that his team can string a run of victories, Pochettino warrants another year at the club. Undoubtedly winning trophies is important for Chelsea, but what the fans need to remember is that the team is still young and needs some time to go all out and win everything.
