The Chennai Super Kings are arguably the most successful team in the 17 seasons of the IPL. They are tied on 5 with arch-rivals Mumbai Indians for the most number of IPL Championships won. But CSK have the upper hand in the number of playoff appearances in the IPL with 12 appearances out of the 15 seasons they have been in the IPL.
But in IPL 2024, the mighty Super Kings led by Captain Cool MS Dhoni missed out on the playoffs after losing by a whisker against the Royal Challengers Bangalore in what was a nail-biting affair. This time around, after retaining their trusted arsenal of Ravindra Jadeja, Pathirana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube and the eternal MS Dhoni, CSK will go into the IPL 2025 Mega Auction with one RTM option available and a 55 Cr purse remaining to look and build a squad which may bring them the IPL trophy one last time before Thala’s farewell.
So let’s take a look at the Top 5 Players Chennai Super Kings will go for in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction.
1. Rishabh Pant
Someone needs to take up the mantle of MS Dhoni and carry it forward. And who better than Rishabh Pant to do it? The man who has been doing it for half a decade now in the Indian setup! This signing makes perfect sense.
Not only because of the magnitude of it but also because of how well Rishabh Pant fits into the CSK setup. A left-handed middle-order batsman who can take on the spinners at will playing home games at Chepauk. That’s a dream come true for CSK fans.
2. Rachin Ravindra
Last year at the World Cup in India, then in the 2024 IPL Season, followed by the recent Test Series between India and New Zealand, Rachin Ravindra has time and again proved his superior ability to play in Indian conditions. Something the CSK management must surely be taking note of.
Especially considering their favouritism of Kiwi players thanks to Stephen Fleming’s presence in the dressing room, and the fact that Rachin Ravindra is quite a handy spinner himself, this is a no-brainer for CSK. Will they use the RTM? Maybe.
3. Maheesh Theekshana
Well if they don’t use the RTM on Rachin Ravindra, they should surely use it on Maheesh Theekshana. The Sri Lankan Mystery spinner has hardly put a foot wrong in the IPL ever since making his first appearance for the Men in Yellow.
CSK has always loved to hold onto its players and Maheesh Theekshana is not someone you should let go when spin bowling is such a big facet of your game.
4. Glenn Maxwell
There’s something else that CSK loves a LOT. And that is having a mountain load of all-rounders. And Glenn Maxwell fits the bill perfectly. A spin bowling destructive machine that can humiliate the opposition’s spin bowling on any day.
Yup, that’s Maxi for you. While it is true that Glenn Maxwell had an IPL to remember in Season 17, one more thing CSK specializes in is reviving the careers of players who are on a negative curve in their career graphs.
5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
And while we are on the subject of careers spiralling downwards, let’s talk about who CSK might bank on this season as their Deepak Chahar replacement. While Chahar might have perfected the art of swinging in the powerplay to get early wickets, CSK might go all out for the one who made that technique his Unique Selling Point long before Chahar started playing in the IPL.
And that is Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Chahar like many Indian Pacers will be going for a lot of money in this auction and with other areas lacking more, CSK will rather go for Bhuvi. Who made his mark in the Indian team under the captaincy of MS Dhoni. If he could achieve the form he had in his Peak, CSK would have found a gem long hidden in the rough.
