ICC Test Cricketer Award More About Fame Than Reality, ft. Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah, has been awarded the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year for 2024. In 2024, Bumrah took 71 wickets while bowling 357 overs in 13 matches at a 14.92 average. Bumrah’s 71 wickets in 2024 made him only the fourth Indian bowler to capture over 70 Test wickets in a calendar year, behind Ravichandran Ashwin, Anil Kumble, and Kapil Dev. Those stats were enough.

It was a year in which Bumrah stood out both at home and away, proving to be a significant factor in putting India in contention for a position in the 2025 World Test Championship Final, although the team fell short of the trophy.

Bumrah’s remarkable 2024 started with India’s famous Test victory over South Africa in Cape Town, where he took eight wickets. He went on to take 19 wickets in India’s 4-1 victory over England, with the highlight being a match haul of nine wickets that helped India level the series in Visakhapatnam. Bumrah’s most impressive Test performance in 2024 came in the high-stakes Border-Gavaskar Trophy Series.

In Australia, where he took 32 wickets in five matches at an average of 13.06 and a strike rate of 28.37 to win the Player of the Series award. Bumrah became the 12th Indian bowler to reach 200 Test wickets during the series in Australia, but it wasn’t enough to keep the visitors from losing 3-1. His best performance on the Australia trip came in Perth. 

He took eight wickets in a spectacular spell, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings to help India win by 295 runs. Jasprit Bumrah also set a new milestone by being the first Test bowler in history with at least 200 dismissals and an average of less than 20 (19.4). However, after the fifth and last test, the pacer is still rehabbing from the back injury he picked during the tour.
