Securing a place on the podium, Sai Sandri and Suraj Sonwane from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar displayed their boxing prowess, clinching bronze medals at the state-level school boxing tournament in Akola.
Suraj Krishna Sonwane, competing in the under-17 age group within the 50 to 52 kg weight category, showcased a dominant performance, advancing to the semi-finals by delivering a stunning performance against Samyak Shirsath from Nashik division. Despite a valiant effort, Suraj had to settle for a bronze after a close match against Suvarnam Singh of Mumbai Division, losing 3-2.
In the under-14 age group, Sai Srinivasa Sandri secured another bronze, competing in the 28 to 30 kg weight category. A setback in the match against Sholk Chawre of Pune Division due to a slowdown in the third round didn’t diminish Sai’s overall achievement. Notably, Sai’s impressive footwork and counter-attacks led to a quarter-final victory against Ayush Patil of Kolhapur division.
Suraj and Sai received commendations from prominent figures, including Shiv Sena leader and District Amateur Boxing Association President Chandrakant Khaire, District Amateur Boxing Association Secretary Neel Patil, and other dignitaries. The recognition extended to educators, sports authorities, and local leaders, reflecting the community’s pride in their accomplishments.
The bronze medals earned by Sai Sandri and Suraj Sonavane underscore the talent flourishing in grassroots boxing programs, highlighting the importance of nurturing and supporting young athletes in their sporting journeys.
