Types of drills for the betterment of the players

Beginner Drills

Full-court dribbling: This drill only requires cones and a basketball. The cones should be placed at various locations on the court. The dribbling should start with the ball and dribble to each cone, then perform a move at the cone before dribbling to the next cone. When approaching the cone, you can make a variety of movements, including a crossover, between the legs, or behind-the-back dribble.

Figure 8: The Figure 8 drill is rather simple to perform. It has to begin with the feet stretched apart and the ball in your right hand. Then, dribble the ball between the legs to the left hand, and then back to the player’s right hand. This drill allows you to swiftly crossover the opponent’s defenders.

Pound dribble drill: To perform this drill the hand needs to be selected by the players. Then place the ball in that hand. Next, bend the knees in an athletic position and repeatedly dribble the ball with that hand. This practice encourages players to keep their heads up and dribble the ball hard.

Ball Slaps: It is another simple drill. To perform this drill the player needs to simply pick up the ball in one hand and slap the ball into the other hand. This is to be done repeatedly and transferred from hand to hand for one minute. Ball slaps are a good warmup and build stronger hands for the players.

Finger taps: Finger taps and ball slaps are similar. The only difference is that instead of smacking the ball, the player needs to tap it back and forth with fingertips. They can do this drill with the arms straight out or above the head. These are just normal drills there is an upgrade after the players become pro in these drills.

Intermediate Drills

Cone touch drill: To perform this drill 10 cones are required. The cones should be spread everywhere of the player’s choice. Then dribble the ball to a cone reach the hand down touch the cone and head to a new cone. The players must keep their heads and eyes up during the entire drill. The cones should be placed diagonally or laterally. This drill will help the players to dribble without looking at the ball.

Wall toss: This basketball drill is to stand around 10 feet from the wall. They start dribbling between the legs, left to right, then right to left behind the back. After this throw the ball on the wall catch it, and repeat the drill. This helps in time to catch a pass and make a move in traffic.

U dribble drill: To perform this drill, the cones must be set in a square. First, dribble to the cone in front of you. Next, dribble sideways to the next cone and backward to the last cone. This is required to use the same hand for each cone and help move in different directions while dribbling.

Chair drills: For this drill, chairs are to be used. The players need to place the chair anywhere they want Dribble towards the chair and crossover, or go behind the back as they advance past it. The chair serves as a defender, and this drill will help to improve their moves against the defenders. After these drills are practiced before going into the full professional modes, the players perform advanced drills.

Advanced Drills

1v1: This basketball drill needs a partner. It is to dribble from one side of the court to the other while the partner slides and defend. This drill will help when a player faces backcourt pressure while trying to advance the ball.

1v1 (one-hand only):This is also a similar kind of the drill. The goal is to dribble from one half of the court to the other using the same hand. The defender will slip and try to stay in front of the attacking player as they work to get past them. This drill helps when a defender takes away one hands and forces to use the other.

Three ball dribble one hand pass: This drill needs three basketball and a partner. The player needs to start dribbling with two balls. Then pass the ball with the left hand to the partner, and dribble with the other one in the right hand to the left. This helps improve crossover, explosiveness and ability to switch hands mid-play.

Tight spaces ball handling drill: It is much like the one v one drill. But it won’t have the whole court to operate with. It needs six to eight cones. The cones will be placed in a straight line, three or four on each side. The goal is to dribble past the defender without going outside the cones. This will help creating spaces and also aid in dribbling through contact.
