How are the Olympic Host cities Selected?

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) goes through an intensified selection process to narrow down and select future host cities for the next multinational event. As per the older system, all interested metropolitan areas may submit proposals for hosting the event. IOC makes questionnaires for the bidding cities to compete against each other.

Then the IOC shortlists the most promising locations and it will be determined based on suggestions from the working group. After this, an Assessment Commission thoroughly evaluates the remaining candidates. Thus, resulting in a single recommendation for attending delegates to vote on. Now there is no longer a fixed election cycle as in the past.

The selection has been streamlined under the Olympic Agenda 2020; ‘promoting sustainable and financially prudent planning through reduced formality and extended advance notice. Debuting fully for the 2032 Summer Games choice, elements of the new approach guided earlier determinations as well.’

The two Future Host Commissions have a dual role, as outlined in their Terms of Reference.

  • The purpose of this committee is to monitor and promote future Olympic Games, Olympic Winter Games, and Youth Olympic Games.
  • It also makes suggestions to the IOC Executive Board to help them respond to new developments and possibilities.

This implies that they are in charge of researching long-term potential and difficulties associated with hosting the Games, including climate change.

Who has Hosted the Olympics the Most?

Over the years there have been several countries that are lucky to host the multinational event. The majority of both Summer and Winter editions have been held either in Western Europe or North America. They have hosted more than 40 major competitions staged across these regions.

African countries are the most unluckiest as they have never hosted a multinational event. Egypt is the front runner to become the first country however there is no official confirmation yet. The countries are in the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific.

Future of the Olympics

The IOC now believes that hosting the Olympic Games no longer has to be an expensive nightmare. The Olympic Games have evolved over the years. They are likely to change big time in the future. The new generations becoming increasingly global. It could well be that the Games will not only adapt to the city but also the world and its requirements. Traditional sports like athletics, swimming, gymnastics, football, judo, rowing, shooting, and wrestling have become less popular over the period.

Climate change will be another huge disadvantage to the Winter Olympics in the future. Speed Skating used to take place outdoors. However, freezing temperatures in many locations are no longer guaranteed. This event takes place in the indoors. As per reports only 8 of the 21 cities that have held the Winter Games in the past will be able to organise the Games in the future.

Conclusion

The Olympics will be hoping to give rise to many new young stars that they have given over the years. It has helped foster international friendships and inspire future generations to strive for greatness for their countries.
