Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has called for Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour. Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach concluded after the T20 World Cup, during which he led the Indian team to become T20 World Champions. Additionally, under his guidance, the team finished as runners-up in both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup and also secured an Asia Cup title.
Rahul Dravid’s contributions to Indian cricket extend beyond his coaching role. He previously headed the National Cricket Academy (NCA) and coached the Indian Under-19 team to a World Cup victory in 2018. As a player, Dravid amassed 24,177 runs, earning immense respect and admiration on and off the field.
In a recent edition of the Mid-Day newspaper, Gavaskar wrote a column that emphasized it would be fitting for the Government of India to honour Dravid with the Bharat Ratna. Gavaskar highlighted Dravid’s achievements as a player and captain, noting his successes in leading India to a series victory in the West Indies and becoming the third Indian captain to win a Test series in England. As the president of the NCA, Dravid nurtured young talent, eventually progressing to coach the senior Indian team.
Gavaskar pointed out how some of the most recent recipients of the Bharat Ratna were primarily recognized for their contributions to their political party and region. In contrast, Rahul Dravid’s influence in bringing home the coveted T20 WC Trophy has brought joy and pride to the entire nation. Gavaskar wrote, “Dravid’s achievements have given joy across all party lines and across caste, creed, communities and brought untold happiness to the whole country. Surely, that deserves the highest accolade the country can give. C’mon, everybody, please join me in asking the government to recognise one of the greatest sons of India.” “Bharat Ratna Rahul Sharad Dravid,” has a fitting ring to it. “Doesn’t it sound good?!,” Gavaskar exclaimed.
Gavaskar also praised Dravid’s selfless attitude, which was evident both during his playing days and as head coach. He recalled instances where Dravid would willingly take the crease when a wicket fell late in the day, demonstrating his dedication and commitment to the team. Dravid’s enduring influence and dedication to Indian cricket, Gavaskar argued, make him a deserving candidate for the Bharat Ratna.
