The Golden Generation of Belgium is coming to an end. Vertoghen, Kompany, Hazard and co. have already left long ago. The next ones to leave will soon be Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. The crazy part is that their Golden Generation hasn’t been able to bring home even a single piece of silverware to date. Many Euros, Many World Cups, and Many Nations Leagues have come and gone by with Belgium failing to make a mark in all of them.
They came the closest during the 2018 World Cup when Eden Hazard had a Magical Tournament, literally carrying the Belgian side on his back up to the Semi-Finals. People had hope after the inclusion of Kevin De Bruyne into the Belgian side, but the man who has won everything at the club was also unable to take Belgium across the line at important moments.
With dismal performances in the last three international tournaments, the World Cup 2022, the UEFA Nations League 2022-23, and Euros 2024, Belgium stands the risk of being kicked out of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League after being outclassed in their first 3 fixtures. Being drawn into the Group of Death alongside Italy and France, football fans were hoping to see strong competition for the top two spots from the 3 European giants.
But soon it became clear that France and Italy were miles clear of Belgium in footballing aspects. Belgium couldn’t even beat a ten-man Italy last time around and were handed defeat against France in their first match in the Nations League. This might be Kevin De Bruyne’s last chance to win something for his country but it doesn’t look so good for Belgium.
If Belgium lose in their upcoming encounter against France that could mean a trophyless international career for Belgium’s Golden Generation, a sight nobody thought they would see back in 2018. Do you think Belgium can defy all the odds and bring home a trophy in the form of the 2024-25 UEFA Nations League?
