Sanju Samson found himself embroiled in controversy during a match against the Delhi Capitals when he was caught on the boundary for a promising 86 runs. The decision by the third umpire to dismiss him sparked heated debate, altering the course of the game. Expressing his frustration, Samson engaged in a heated exchange with the umpires, leading to disciplinary action from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which imposed a 30 per cent fine on him.
The incident occurred during Rajasthan Royals’ clash against the Delhi Capitals, where Samson’s dismissal left him visibly dismayed. Despite a stellar innings comprising 86 runs off 46 balls, punctuated by 8 fours and 6 sixes, his departure in the 16th over proved pivotal. A hefty shot off Mukesh Kumar found its way to Shai Hope stationed on the boundary, resulting in Samson’s catch and subsequent dismissal. However, his dissent with the umpires’ decision was apparent, leading to the BCCI’s punitive action.
In a statement released by the BCCI, it was confirmed that Sanju Samson, the captain of the Rajasthan Royals, was fined 30 per cent of his match fee for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the 56th IPL match against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Samson was found guilty of committing a Level 1 offence under Section 2.8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, and he accepted the sanction imposed by the match referee. As per the Code of Conduct, the decision of the match official in Level 1 violations is deemed final and binding.
This incident is not isolated, as earlier, Virat Kohli also faced repercussions for disputing umpiring decisions. During the match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli contested an umpire’s call that led to his dismissal, resulting in a 50 per cent fine from the BCCI.
