Ballon d’Or without GOATs marks the decline of the beautiful game

Ballon d’Or 2024 will be presented on October 28th. Over the years the trophy has been awarded to the best footballer of the every year. Several footballers have won one of the most individual trophies in footballing history. Previously it was given by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). However, they last presented it in 2015. France Football took it over.

Certain legendary names have not won the Ballon d’Or for once in their lifetime. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two most iconic names in the trophy’s history. Both footballers have dominated football for over 15 years. During their prime era, there was no one near to win the Golden Ball. Combined they have won 13 Ballon d’Or. Messi has the most with 8 and Ronaldo is just behind with 5.

Their contribution to the game of football will be unmatched. Messi and Ronaldo created some monstrous records throughout their respective careers. Even if their records are broken the legacy that they have created will be unmatched. Being at very best year after year and performing on the biggest stage. The Argentine however claimed his final trophy last year for his 2022 World Cup win. Both have left Europe and play in lower-division leagues.

Ballon d’Or has lost it’s credibility

Does this mark the decline of world football? This will be the first time since 2003 that the two GOATs have not made it through the 30-man nominations list. Nowadays people having 30 G/A are making it through the list and are favourites as well. Earlier even 60 G/A per season could not define the clear winner of the Ballon d’Or.

Football somewhat despite the young talents has lost some credibility. There are no such breathtaking competitions or fights among the footballers. The quality has gone down as well compared to the legends who have previously taken the field during Messi and Ronaldo’s time and even before that. It was much more competitive and intense.
