International Events Cannot Be Taken Seriously With Poor Infrastructure

On Tuesday, the Malaysia Open Super 1000 witnessed odd happenings. First-round matches on Courts 2 and 3 were halted after splotches of water began to fall from the roof of the Kuala Lumpur venue. The Malaysia Open Super 1000 is 2025’s first major badminton event. India shuttler HS Prannoy‘s match was also hampered when water accumulated on his left frontcourt near the net on Court 3.

At that point, HS Prannoy had a 21-12, 6-3 lead over Canadian Brian Yang in the second game. In the second game, HS Prannoy was seen indicating toward the chair umpire, implying that the court was becoming dangerous as larger splotches formed. The splotches were generated in the area where a right-handed player would typically play his backhand lunge. Prannoy’s coach, Gurusaidutt, was also seen becoming animated.

He warned the player about the possible danger. The referee quickly got on the court, and both players departed after 25 minutes. The organising committee members were observed inspecting the leak. Previously, there were concerns when Yang played on the far side. However, play continued while courtside officials cleaned up the court. HS Prannoy’s match resumed at about 4:15 PM IST. However, the match was quickly suspended due to the same reason.

Yang was up 11-9 in the second game when another interruption occurred. The scenario was bleaker in Court 2. Officials were spotted carrying many towels to clean up the court. When the play was called off, Chinese Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian were 11-10 up over the host team of Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing. Earlier on Tuesday, Indian women’s doubles duo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand upset Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai 21-10, 21-10 in just 30 minutes to advance to the round of 16.

Later in the day, India’s Lakshya Sen will face Taiwan’s Y Chi. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will begin their campaign on Wednesday against K Tang and MC Lu from Taiwan. On the same court, Indian women’s doubles combo Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Thailand’s Ornnicha Jongsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai 21-10, 21-10 in 30 minutes.
