Indian Shuttlers Sacrificing Consistency For Big Tournaments

Indian shuttlers will be thrilled for the New Year since the season began with the Malaysia Open and India Open. But the main attention will be on the famous All England Open Badminton Championship and World Championship, as well as other major events. Indian shuttlers have won five titles on the 2024 BWF World Tour. The five titles are one in men’s and women’s singles, two in men’s doubles, and one in women’s doubles.

The 2019 season will begin with an Asian swing, with the Malaysia Open, a Super 1000 tournament, beginning on January 7 in Kuala Lumpur, followed by the Indian Open, a Super 750 event, taking place in the nation’s capital from January 14 to 19. The Indonesia Master Super 500 (January 21-26) and Thailand Masters Super 300 (January 28-February 2) will wrap up the Asian circuit before the action switches to Europe.

The European leg will begin with the All England Open, the world’s oldest and most famous badminton tournament, which will take place from March 11 to 16 at Birmingham’s Utilita Arena. Indian shuttlers have been competing in the All-England Open for a long time, but they have only won two titles and had five final appearances between 1980 and 2024. Prakash Padukone is the only Indian to have reached the competition final twice.

All England and Worlds or Nothing For Indian Badminton

The former shuttler qualified first in 1980, when he made history as the first Indian to win the prestigious trophy. The next year, he reached his second final of the competition but was unable to retain his men’s singles title. After a 21-year wait, Pullela Gopichand became the second Indian to win the All-England Open in 2001. Saina Nehwal was the first Indian woman to compete in the All England Summit clash in 2015.

The Olympic bronze medalist finished second before Lakshya Sen became the first Indian male shuttler to reach the men’s final in 21 years, following Gopichand. The BWF World Championships will be place from August 25 to August 31 in Paris, France. Between 1983 and 2023, India won 14 championship medals. Sindhu is the most successful Indian badminton player in the BWF World Championships, winning five medals.
