Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies has officially been selected as India’s entry for the Oscar Academy Awards 2025 by the Film Federation of India. Lapataa Ladies was directed by Kiran Rao and produced by Amir Khan. The movie follows the story of two newlywed brides, who accidentally switch places on a train ride and end up at each other’s husband’s house.
The selection of this movie was a great choice, at least that’s what I think. And when I say great, I come with all the right reasons to state this fact. The movie is very unique in its way, it has a very fresh concept and storyline that simultaneously addresses the old stereotypes of male dominance in our society. It shows no matter how modernized we become, there are still some places and people in our society that prefer male dominance over everything. This was the core issue that Laapataa Ladies addressed followed by a beautiful story of two newlywed brides. What won my heart was the innocence of the characters and the smooth transition between the script to the camera. It portrays the journey that women’s empowerment can be confronted with despite all the provocation, the place, the lack of education, and the people around you. The movie is not just about entertainment, it carries a strong social message.
I do not mean to contradict my own opinions but there is one more movie which I feel was a great choice for the Academy Awards, Amar Singh Chamkila. The movie’s excellence proves many things, a well-made biopic that touched the hearts of its audience. Imtiaz Ali undoubtedly created a masterpiece by highlighting the performance of deeply immersed actors like Diljit Dosanjh. No one could’ve done justice to the role like him, he played it with so much grace and fineness. The movie checked every facet of Indian Cinema with the documentary-style biopic. No less credit to Parneeti Chopra, she was magnificent in her role contributing to a bigger factor in the movie’s success. Amar Singh Chamkila proved that Imtiaz Ali is a key stakeholder when it comes to the right casting choice for a Film.
