Amrita Bhagat, a powerlifter hailing from Raigad, recently earned the prestigious ‘Best Lifter’ award at the Asia Pacific African Classic and Equip Powerlifting Competition held in South Africa. Amrita, who resides in Vangani, proudly represented India in the 47 kg weight category. Her performance was nothing short of spectacular as she lifted 122.5 kg in the squat, 67.5 kg in the bench press, and 132.5 kg in the deadlift, all within the junior equipment category. This impressive showing resulted in a total lift of 322.5 kg, securing her the gold medal and the distinguished title of ‘Asian Best Lifter‘.
This marked Bhagat’s second foray into international competition, where she upheld her streak of winning medals. Under the mentorship of Vikrant Anil Gaikwad from Khopoli, Amrita has demonstrated exceptional dedication and hard work. Her victory is particularly significant as she is the first female athlete from Raigad to claim a title at the Asian Championship, setting a new precedent for future athletes from the region.
The president of the Powerlifting Sports Association, Girish Sharad Vedak, a former state athlete, along with former national athlete Madhav Pandit and the association’s secretary Arun Patkar, have all expressed immense pride in Amrita’s achievements. The association’s office bearers have extended their heartfelt congratulations to her, acknowledging her relentless efforts and wishing her continued success in her powerlifting career.
To commemorate her outstanding accomplishments, the Powerlifting Sports Association has announced plans to honour Amrita Bhagat in the near future. Her journey and triumphs serve as an inspiration to many aspiring athletes, demonstrating the heights that can be reached through perseverance and dedication.
