Amit Panghal Included in Indian Boxing Team

Amit Panghal has been included in the Indian boxing team for the final Olympic qualifying boxing tournament to be held in Bangkok.

World Championship silver medalist Amit Panghal has returned to the Indian boxing team for the final Olympic qualifiers to be held in Bangkok from May 25 to June 2. Five boxers have dropped out of the squad for the second world qualifier after a poor performance in the Olympic qualifiers held in Italy last month. India’s high-performance director Bernard Dunne also had to step down.

World Championship 2023 bronze medalist Deepak Bhoria (51kg) and Mohammad Husamuddin (57kg), six-time Asian Championship medalist Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), defending national champion Lakshya Chahar (80kg) and 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist La Jamboria (60 kg) did not get a place in the team. Amit Panghal, who won a silver medal at the 2019 World Championships, a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2024 Stranza Memorial Tournament, is the last chance to make it to a second Olympics.

National champion Sachin Siwach (57 kg) has also got a place in the team. Himachal Pradesh’s Abinash Jamwal will replace Thapa in the 63.5 kg category while Abhimanyu Laura will replace Lakshya in the 80 kg category. So far no Indian male boxer has been able to reach the Olympic quota. So far, only Nikhat Zareen (50 kg), Preeti Panwar (54 kg), Parveen Hooda (57 kg) and Lovlina Borgohen (75 kg) have managed to reach the Olympic quota. In the women’s category, Ankushita Boro failed to meet the quota in the 66 kg category in Italy and will compete in the 60 kg category.

Women: Ankushita Boro (60 kg), Arundhati Chaudhary (66 kg).
