What else does Alex Pereira need to prove to be in the “Greatest Of All Time” conversation? Well Conor McGregor has answered this question recently. According to UFC’s Greatest ever showman, ‘Poatan’ still needs to become the first ever UFC fighter to have held a Championship Titles in 3 different weight classes his fighting career atleast once. Basically, become the first ever Triple-Champ in UFC History. Something even the ‘Mac’ himself hasn’t done yet in his storied UFC career.
The Irishman Conor McGregor was all praise for the current UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Alex Pereira in a recent interview with the UFC reporter and content-creator, The Schmo. According to McGregor, 2024 belonged to Alex, and not only that, but the Light Heavyweight Champ who is coming off a massive win against Khalil Rountree, is also the rightful owner of the Pound for Pound #1 Title, ahead of Islam Makhachev. While McGregor might be biased against the Dagestani champ due to obvious reasons there is no denying the fact that 2024 was indeed all about Alex Pereira.
Not only did Poatan defend his Championship Belt Thrice in the same Calendar year, but just like McGregor in his prime, it was the former kickboxing champion who brought crowds and engagement to the UFC. Day by day, Pereira’s fanbase has been increasing and the 37-year-old just can’t stop winning. Whether or not he deserves the P4P #1 title is a different story all together but he surely has a shot at winning a Championship Belt in his third weightclass since joining the UFC. He already has been the Champion in the Middleweight division, and now holds the Light Heavyweight title.
During the Schmo interview, McGregor said, “You know 2024 has been Alex Pereira’s year. No one can deny that. I put Alex as number one.” He even talked about the two matchups that he believes Alex Pereira needs to have in the future. The first one, was Jon Jones, at Heavyweight, where McGregor believes ‘Poatan’ could cause some problems for ‘Bones’.
“I think he poses a lot of problems for John. Also, you know that’s a dangerous style for John”, McGregor said. The other matchup the Mac would love for Pereira is against Magomed Ankalaev at Light Heavyweight. “There is one more matchup for him at Light Heavyweight that i’d be interested in as against the Dagestani,” McGregor stated.
He continued by suggesting Alex Pereira’s final peak must and should becoming the first ever Triple Champ in the UFC. McGregor proposed, “Other than that i’d like to see him go for it. You know, someone has to go for the tree belts, you know it’s myself or himself.”
The scary part about all this is that, Conor McGregor is probably spot on. And Alex Pereira could actually have the chance to become the first ever UFC Triple Champion if he decides to go for Jon Jones’ or Tom Aspinall’s Championship depending on who is the reigning Heavyweight Champion once his bout against Ankalaev is over with.
