Aitana Bonmati, the current Ballon d’Or winner, and possibly the best women’s footballer on the planet recently scripted history with her club, FC Barcelona yet again. Yesterday, on September 16th, 2024, Aitana Bonmati secured a brand new contract deal with FC Barcelona which became a record-breaking contract making the Spanish midfielder the highest-paid Female Footballer in History.
Her new 4-year contract with the Catalan Club will run till the year 2028. The 26-yr-old playmaker has played for 275 matches in the Blaugrana jersey scoring 96 competitive goals in the process. She is also tied with the Barcelona legend, and two-time Ballon d’Or winner Alexis Putellas for the record for the most goals scored in the Champions League by a Barcelona player. With all these accolades to her name, and being one of the top 2 candidates for a repeat of the Golden Ball triumph this year as well, surely Aitana Bonmati must have got a very very lucrative contract renewal with FC Barcelona.
Well, if you think so, you are wrong. The Disparity in Wages in Men’s and Women’s football is Disgraceful. And Aitana Bonmati’s case is a perfect example of such. The winner of 23 trophies with Barcelona, the best Women’s footballer on the planet, Aitana Bonmati will only earn every year what someone like Erling Haaland, or Sadio Mane earns in a week!

According to the Spanish outlet La Tribuna, the Best Footballer in the Women’s game on the planet is set to earn around $1 Million annually in FC Barcelona under her “record-breaking” new contract! Erling Haaland on the other hand earns upwards of $50 Million annually, that’s almost Million per week. Even someone like Antony, who is one of the worst signings in football history in recent times earns Aitana Bonmati’s Annual salary a month with his wages at Man United reportedly being around $250K per week.
This disparity among the wages of the top men’s and women’s footballers is extremely shocking. Especially when you consider that Cristiano Ronaldo, currently the highest-paid footballer in the world, makes around $221.79 Million a year. In other words, Aitana Bonmati earns 0.45% of what Cristiano Ronaldo earns in a year.
