Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is offering an exciting opportunity with the commencement of admissions for the third batch of the Diploma in Mountaineering and Allied Sports, a pioneering program developed by Guardian Giripremi Institute of Mountaineering (GGIM). The unique one-year diploma, a collaboration between GGIM, SPPU, and Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi, provides a comprehensive curriculum blending theoretical knowledge and practical training in various facets of mountaineering.
The program, the first of its kind in India, covers a range of subjects including technical mountain climbing skills, disaster management, mountain biodiversity, human physiology, fitness science, soft skills development, legal aspects, and career opportunities in the adventure and mountaineering field. The course, conducted by experienced mountaineers and faculty from allied fields, offers a total of 1200 marks and 36 credits over two semesters.
While the program’s ambition is commendable, skeptics argue that the focus on adventure sports might divert attention and resources from traditional academic disciplines.
