A hero’s farewell; PR Sreejesh’s No. 16 Jersey frames in Hockey India’s Hall of Honour

The Indian Hockey team have won bronze in the Paris Olympics 2024. They defeated Spain in the Bronze Medal Match. The team performed excellently throughout the event. They came out second in the group of deaths which consisted of Belgium, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland. They lost just one game to Belgium in the group stage. Harmanpreet Singh’s side won against Australia after 52 years in the Olympics.

PR Sreejesh the goalkeeper of the national team announced his retirement after the multinational event ended. He has been a legend in field hockey. The team received a huge welcome at the Delhi airport after they returned. On Wednesday 14th August, Hockey India held a farewell ceremony in New Delhi to honour Sreejesh and celebrate with the two-time Olympic bronze medals. Several former and current players attended the event.

Sreejesh was the wall for India in the Paris Olympics his match-winning saves helped the side win the medal in Paris. He was excellent in the game against Great Britain and Spain. The 36-year-old has won the Padma Shri award for his excellence in the field of hockey. He has been honoured with the Arjun Award. Sreejesh might have been the greatest goalkeeper India could ever get.

PR Sreejesh’s legacy will be unmatched

As a mark of respect, the player’s identical red jerseys with Sreejesh’s name and number 16 on the back. Hockey India has announced that they will retire jersey No. 16 in honor of their legendary goalkeeper. It is a wonderful decision from the team and the management to retire the jersey of a legend who has given sensational services to the national team over the years.

Will India find another PR Sreejesh? It will be difficult for the nation to replace his legacy and the amount of service he has given under the post for the nation. However, the team might get a better keeper than him but the unmatched legacy of the 36-year-old keeper will surely remain eternal for the team.
