In a strategic move to unearth India’s future boxing champions, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has partnered with REC Limited, a prominent Maharatna Company under the Ministry of Power, to launch the Western REC Open Talent Hunt Programme at the Army Sports Institute in Pune.
Geared towards discovering and nurturing emerging boxing talents, the program aims to make a significant impact on the national boxing scene.
The open tournaments, designed to be an essential platform for boxers across the nation, saw 16 Maharashtra-based boxers clinching titles in the junior and sub-junior categories. The forthcoming competition for elite and youth categories is scheduled to unfold from January 12 to 19.
Hemanta Kumar Kalita, Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of India, expressed the commitment of BFI and REC to foster Indian boxing. The REC Open Talent Hunt Programme is viewed as a major stride in identifying and cultivating potential boxers from diverse backgrounds.
Kalita emphasized the openness of the program, allowing any boxer with skills and potential to participate, offering a golden opportunity to leave an impact on the national stage.
While praising the initiative, skeptics argue that such talent hunts may lead to increased competition, potentially overshadowing the mental well-being of young boxers striving for recognition.
