Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Tuesday that the government is making a serious push to bring the 2036 Olympics to India. In his speech at the opening ceremony of the 38th National Games at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium here, Modi stated that hosting the Olympics will not only boost sports facilities but also promote growth in areas such as construction, transportation, and tourism.
Narendra Modi was present on Tuesday, the 38th National Games. It began with a vibrant opening ceremony displaying Uttarakhand’s religious legacy and bio-diversity, as almost 10,000 athletes prepared to fight for podium finishes across 32 categories. The Games will last until February 14, with competitions taking place in seven places throughout the hill state, with Dehradun serving as the primary venue. There are approximately 450 gold medals.
India has expressed an interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, and the IOA is in talks with the International Olympic Committee’s Future Hosts Committee. Modi stated that the government’s support for athletes was evident in the medal count at international competitions. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the last two editions of the Games, in 2022 (Gujarat) and 2023 (Goa). Modi was given a traditional cap and shawl.
India’s Olympic Push
A keepsake including replicas of Games mascot ‘Mauli’ and medals after riding around the stadium in a decorated golf cart. Most of the country’s recognised athletic stars, such as javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, shuttler PV Sindhu, and shooter Manu Bhaker, are skipping the event, allowing new competitors to make their mark. Olympic medal-winning shooters Swapnil Kusale and Sarabjot Singh, shuttler Lakshya Sen, and boxer Lovlina Borgahain are among the notable participants.
Four sports kalarippayattu, yogasana, mallakhambh, and rafting—will be demonstration (non-medal) events. Modi said while inaugurating the Games, The way our athletes aim for bigger goals, India is also moving forward with a great resolution. India is making a strong push to host the 2036 Olympics. When the Olympics will happen in India, it will take India’s sport to new heights.
