Brighton won 3-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday. Keeping United in the Premier League’s bottom half, as Ruben Amorim’s disastrous start at the club continued. Manchester United presently ranks 13th in the Premier League. Bruno Fernandes’ penalty was United’s only chance on goal in their defeat to Brighton. At this stage of the season, only 13 United teams have had a lower points count in the history of the club. The last time was in 1986-87.
United lost their sixth home Premier League defeat of the season. Their most in the first 12 games in a league season since 1893–94. They have allowed the first goal in each of their previous five Premier League games at Old Trafford. Their joint-longest ever such stretch in the tournament, doing so five times in a row between August and October 2023. United have lost 10 of their 22 Premier League games this season.
The earliest they have touched double figures in defeats since 1989-90 under Alex Ferguson. Amorim believes that honesty is the best way to rouse his charges, but he may want to reconsider his Ange Postecoglou-esque insistence that he will not change a 3-4-3 system that has his team as muddled as Erik ten Hag’s vintage, which is from a “new coach who is losing more than the last.”
From Glory to Humiliation
Ruben Amorim has labelled his Manchester United team as “the worst team possibly in the history of Manchester United.” Amorim’s players were portrayed as helpless onlookers for Brighton’s early opening, which was scored in a seamless back-to-front move that was far too simple for the visitors to accomplish. Carlos Baleba lifted the ball from his half to the rampaging Kaoru Mitoma on the left. He danced forward and sent the ball over.
Yankuba Minteh’s finish caught the home defense off guard. United were shaken. Amorim tossed his hands in disgust. Five minutes in, and those in red were already behind the eight ball. The display was highlighted by Noussair Mazraoui dropping the ball three times to Brighton, an aimless Bruno Fernandes pass, and Amorim’s team getting outmuscled too often in 50-50 situations.
