After winning a second-round match in Melbourne on Sunday. Veteran Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Chinese partner Shuai Zhang advanced to the Australian Open’s mixed doubles quarterfinals. Despite facing fourth-seeded Taylor Townsend of the United States and Hugo Nys of Monaco, Bopanna and Shuai advanced to the round of eight without ever setting foot on the court. The winner of the match between Timea Babos of Hungary and Marcelo Arevalo of El Salvador.
As well as the Australian duo of Olivia Gadecki and John Peers will be the next opponent Bopanna and Shuai face. In their first encounter, the Indo-Chinese duo had already won 6-4 6-4 over Ivan Dodic of Croatia and Kristina Mladenovic of France. Bopanna and Nicolas Barrientos, his new Colombian partner, had earlier lost to Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar of Spain in the first round of the men’s doubles competition.
Together with his Australian partner, Matthew Ebden, the 44-year-old Indian won the 2024 tournament. Bopanna became the oldest player to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era with that historic victory. Meanwhile, India’s men’s doubles journey at the Australian Open 2025 came to an end on Saturday as N. Sriram Balaji and his partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela were eliminated in the second round.
Bopanna-Zhang Duo Overhyped
Balaji and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela gave it their all against Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral of Portugal. But were ultimately defeated in a thrilling three-set match on Saturday. Despite putting up a good fight, they lost 6-7, 6-4, 3-6. Coco Gauff’s streak of consecutive set wins came to an end in the Australian Open.
Her quest for a second Grand Slam title continued on Sunday. With a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 comeback win over Belinda Bencic in the fourth round. Gauff, a 20-year-old from Florida who won the 2023 U.S. Open as a youth, has won all 16 sets this year and 24 of her previous 25 since the end of last season, including a WTA Finals victory.
