Ange Postecoglou has in his 1.5 years at the North London club, Tottenham Hotspurs, seen some of the best and the worst moments a manager could possibly witness. After a bang-average campaign last season in the Premier League, the Greek manager was asked how soon could Tottenham start aiming for silverware and his thoughts for the upcoming season. To which he had then replied, “I always win trophies in my second season”.
He was surprised back then as his statements drew a very negative response from the fans and critics. Well, after their performance at the Tottenham Hotspurs Stadium yesterday, nobody is doubting Ange Postecoglou. Spurs defeated Liverpool 1-0 to take the lead in the 1st Leg of the EFL Cup Semi-Finals. While the 2nd leg is still very far away, the anticipation amongst the Spurs camp will be aplenty. The evergreen bottlers of football have not won a major competition in the last 16-plus years with their last triumph being an FA Cup win way back in 2008.
Tottenham “One Game Away” From Silverware
The last time Tottenham came so close to some silverware was in the 2019 UEFA Champions League final against the same opponents they defeated yesterday. Now, not only are they ahead on the scoreline going into the 2nd Leg, but the 2nd semi-final is also going in favour of Tottenham. Newcastle beat Arsenal by a 2-0 scoreline yesterday almost securing their spot in the Final. Meanwhile, some Spurs fans would want a North London Derby in the final if they end up qualifying, most fans would prefer Newcastle over Arsenal.
The only challenge to get there though, would be holding their lead over Liverpool at Anfield. And that is some task to do. Especially against a team so in form like Liverpool currently are. Will the bottlers find a way to redeem themselves? Let us know your opinion in the comments below.
