Jessica Pegula Is Set For A Downfall In Melbourne

Jessica Pegula will not compete in the WTA Brisbane 2025, her first tournament of the year and preparation for the forthcoming Australian Open 2025. The tournament revealed on social media that the American is out of action due to a left knee injury. Jess has been battling this issue since last season’s conclusion, forcing her to retire from the WTA Finals’ previous match.  After the first two round-robin matches, she was still without a win.

Pegula withdrew from the tournament before facing Iga Swiatek due to a left knee ailment. She has been rehabilitating and will not compete in the 2025 United Cup. Pegula’s ongoing knee issue has caused her to withdraw from the WTA 500 event in Brisbane. On Thursday, December 26, event organisers revealed that the World No. 7 would be replaced by Dutch player Suzan Lamens. It’s been over two months since Pegula sustained her injury.

She has two weeks to recover and prepare for the Melbourne Major, which begins on January 12. Pegula defeated Rebecca Marino 6-2, 6-4 in her first-round match at the Grand Slam Down Under in 2018. In the second round, she lost to Clara Burel of France with scores of 6–4, 6–2. Her best performance in Melbourne was reaching the quarterfinals in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

Jessica Pegula Sends Shockwaves

The 2025 Brisbane International main draw will begin on December 29. With Pegula’s exit, Aryna Sabelanka, Emma Navarro, and Daria Kasatkina are top contenders in the hardcourt competition. Jessica Pegula sustained a rib injury midway through the 2024 season. She was unable to participate in the European clay swing due to an injury. She missed the French Open and other WTA 1000 tournaments, including the Italian Open and Madrid Open.

Pegula said, via Tennis.com, “I haven’t had that long of a break since Covid. I’ve played so much over the last three, or four years that it all caught up with me. I was at a burning-out point and I think, in a way, getting hurt was probably the best thing for me.”
