Nick Kyrgios recently retaliated at Nicolas Mahut after the latter criticised him. Kyrgios used the great Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic as examples to emphasise his points. Before his impending comeback to competitive tennis, Kyrgios had stated that his goal was to win the singles Grand Slam. At the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Kyrgios came the closest to winning a singles major. He lost to Novak Djokovic in the second round.
At the 2025 Australian Open, the Australian had subsequently voiced confidence about a possible battle with the current World No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, a former doubles No. 1, claims that Nick Kyrgios’ hopes of winning a singles Grand Slam championship are not “realistic”. It is because the Australian is expected to return to competition after missing nearly two years of action.
The 2022 Wimbledon finalist continued by saying that many tennis players had already lost the mental fight before facing Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer. Nonetheless, Kyrgios asserts that he possesses the “ability and belief” required to defeat the top players. One of the rare players who has at least one victory over each of the renowned Big Three is the Australian. The Australian previously provided clarification on his remarks.
Nick Kyrgios Calls Out Mahut
After making comments against Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz caused social media backlash. Mahut told Eurosport, “I think all the things before the match are harder to handle for Sinner than the match itself. Kyrgios hasn’t been back that long and of course, you can dream of the title at the Australian Open, but you have to be realistic. Even if the crowd gets excited, Sinner will win that with 6-3’s.”
In reply Nick Kyrgios, hat he had individuals like Nicolas Mahut advising him to be realistic, acknowledging Mahut as an incredible doubles player and a Grand Slam champion. However, Kyrgios pointed out that Mahut had not achieved the same level of success in singles as he had. Kyrgios suggested that Mahut’s opinion was likely shaped by his own career limitations and stated that, on the singles court.
