Colby Covington spoke out on YouTube on Monday. Criticising the fact that his UFC fights against Joaquin Buckley on Saturday in Tampa. It was halted in the third round owing to severe bleeding from a cut above his right eye. However, UFC legend Chael Sonnen, who was in Covington’s corner during the fight. He said that he was about to call the fight off before the doctor intervened.
Colby Covington suffered a cut on his eyelid in the first round. It worsened as the rounds progressed until the judge stopped the fight. A few seconds before the end of the third round due to both combatants’ excessive blood on their bodies. Despite Covington’s requests not to be declared technically knocked out in his comeback after a year off. The doctor determined that he could not continue.
UFC CEO Dana White criticised the decision to stop the fight in the third round, stating that although it was a cut with scandalous bleeding, in Las Vegas, Colby Covington would have been allowed to finish. Covington did not talk to the media as he typically does following the outcome, with “Chaos” waiting to share his initial thoughts on what happened after he was stitched up by medical staff.
Covington Claims ‘Blatant Injustice’
Dana White said, “That fight doesn’t get stopped in Las Vegas. That fight goes on in Las Vegas. One hundred percent. He’s always tough and he’s always tough, like I just said. Did you hear the body shots he took tonight? And the headshots he took? Those things would have stopped other guys. Colby is tough, but I also feel like Colby wasn’t too upset that the fight was stopped because of the cut. The cut was bothering him.”
Sonnen said on his YouTube channel, that the fighter was busted open so badly that the doctor had to examine the injury three times. He mentioned that the doctor stopped the action twice to allow the fight to continue but on the third inspection, decided that it could not go on any longer. Sonnen added that he was about to stop the fight, having already grabbed the towel.
