Aryna Sabalenka has been awarded the WTA Player of the Year for 2024, her first time receiving the coveted award. The 26-year-old had a remarkable season with two Grand Slam victories, finishing the year as the world’s number-one player. Her season was highlighted by her successful defense of the Australian Open title in January and her first win at the United States Open in September.
In addition to her Grand Slam victories, she won WTA 1000 championships in Cincinnati and Wuhan, resulting in an amazing 56-14 win-loss record. Her on-court accomplishments won her approximately $10 million in prize money. Sabalenka’s strong streak from August to October, during which she won 16 consecutive games, was one of the season’s turning points. She had won 23 of her previous 24 games simultaneously.
This showcased her consistency on the highest platforms. She thanked supporters for their votes in helping her win the 2024 WTA Player of the Year title. The Belarusian joked about the royal treatment she received following her recent triumph. In a recent Instagram video provided by the WTA, Aryna Sabalenka thanked fans for their support. Sabalenka later shared the video on her Instagram story.
Aryna Sabalenka Reigns Supreme
Sabalenka’s success in marquee events swayed the odds in her favour. Iga Swiatek of Poland won seven titles this season, including a Grand Slam victory at the French Open, and led the tour with 61 wins. In addition to Sabalenka, Emma Navarro was named Most Improved Player, Paula Badosa as Comeback Player, Lulu Sun as Newcomer of the Year, and Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini as ‘Doubles Team of the Year.’
